SALVAGE OPS

Following the treasure maps
of dreams and flashbacks
I dive the murky fathoms down
again and again
to hover weightless above
the derelict hulks of my childhood
rusting
on the ocean floor

of deep-sixed memories
strewn with the artifactual debris
of a past that once seemed to have
vanished
in the Bermuda Triangle
of Time’s crosscurrents...
Only outlines discernable now
beneath the silt of decades:

the heirloom compass I refused to steer by
the anchor whose chain I severed in mutiny
and the barnacled cannons I fired with malice
during the historic
Angry Young Man Rebellions.
It’s all
all
down there

skulking like groupers in grottoes, the bones

of a Davy Jones' locker I rifle through

to harvest my poems like pearls

and pieces of eight

DNA

Like those

embedded-in-amber

mosquitoes whose

blood-bloated bellies

gave up the ingested

ghosts of DNA

to populate

Jurassic Park

with long-gone

born-again

thunder lizards

My poems

like moths fluttering

in the widescreen’s glow

glue themselves

into the fly-paper of

the world wide web

their tiny little torsos

mummifying, crystallizing

into the jaundiced

jewelry of time

Waiting for you

to stumble on them

and reconstruct perhaps

a paleozoic portrait,

in the museum

of your head

and your heart…

a ‘hologram,’

if you will,

of this soul

that once

walked

the

earth

EXPLOSIVES AND DEMOLITIONS

   

I classify the nouns in my arsenal
in ascending order:
blasting caps

grenades
C-4, det cord
and the anti-tank mines

Verbs?
The matches, cigarette lighters
and detonators

Conjunctions, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs:
just so much fuse
and firing wire

My poems aren’t about a daffodil or cloud...
my poems aren’t pretty—
they’re crude, they’re loud

I am the Guy Fawkes
the Ted Kaczynski
of poetry

Gingerly shish-kebabing
hair-trigger words
into these lethal combinations

These weapons of mass description…
if I’m not meticulous
I’ll blow my damn fingers off!

So before you read one of mine aloud
you better yell fire in the hole!

Dropped in the middle of the haves
and the have nots are we,
Hermes’ poets, honorary haves, drops
of mercury (let’s say)
hunching our shiny backs inward,
unlured (mostly) by their ribbons.

Not an oil and not a water
but an element,
citizens of our own liquidity
offended at being seen as silver
going for the gold, we’re mercurial
makers of verses.

Suppose they tap us,
what do they see?
Neither kegs, reservoirs, nor faucets,
just us snugging back to poems,
which are ourselves,
like the children of old families,
loyal, dear Hg, to a fault.
